Data Validation and Restrictions in the GBIF network

Welcome to the Second ENBI e-conference by the ENBI forums team (9th March)

Opening Statement by Nicholas Bailly (moderator) (9th March)

Session 1: Data validation

Session 2: Restrictions of data access

  • Day 5 (Tuesday March 16): Should different kinds of users have different access rights? In other words, should the access be restricted with respect to the data quality? Or should we only warn users of poor quality data, and suggested restricted uses? If restrictions are retained, how many (and which) user categories should include such system? Who, and how, should evaluate the access category given to each user? Is it necessary to manage a registry system? by Nicolas Bailly
  • Day 6 (Wednesday March 17): User-dependent data access. Particular cases. Should data about special specimens (e.g. types) generally available? Should information about specimens in the progress of being described as new taxa be included in GBIF? Or any data waiting publishing? If so, how? by Nicolas Bailly
  • Day 7 (Thursday March 18): General restrictions to data access. Conservation issues. What kinds of data (e.g. endangered species distribution) should be restricted to public access? Who, and how, should it be decided (data providers, GBIF nodes, and governments)? This restriction should be partial (e.g., providing general geographic quotations such as Germany or Bavaria) or total (no information at all)? by Nicolas Bailly
  • Day 8 (Friday March 19):To finish the issues on possible restrictions of data accessibility, remains the problems of intellectual property rights, both at data provider and portal levels. We could hope that it is easier with data than with pictures and photographs, but is it?
General restrictions to data access. IP protection. How can IP from data gatherers and data providers can be protected and recognised? Have you in your own institution special policies? by Nicolas Bailly
  • Day 9 (Monday March 22): Are they possible automatic ways to provide such assessments? Are there current indices and procedures to assess the quality of data in biodiversity databases? As cited in the open statement document, we developed for collection data in FishBase the so-called NIACC multidigit index. How can we assess reliability and accuracy of the various usual collection specimen associated data: identification (taxonomy), nomenclature, geographic origin, date, etc? Should all these data be assessed? How to provide assessments for different public from specialists to large public? Should we provide quality indices per field, or per record? by Nicolas Bailly

Session 3 : General discussion about most relevant topics arisen in the previous sessions

Closing Statement by Nicholas Bailly (moderator) (25th March)
